What is Keratoconus

Keratoconus is an eye condition characterized by the progressive thinning of the cornea (clear domed-shape front of eye), and as the cornea continues to thin, it starts to protrude outward into a cone shape. (add picture 'normal vs. keratoconus'.jpg within body)

During the early stages of keratoconus, symptoms may include blurry or cloudy vision, vision fluctuations along with distortions and heightened sensitivity to light. In some cases, vision rapidly deteriorates and night vision becomes extremely poor.

What Causes
Keratoconus

There's an interesting link with those with Keratoconus often having chronic allergies, asthma, and eczema with symptoms of sneezing, watery, itchy eyes. It is very common for someone with Keratoconus to admit to eyelid rubbing. Though the specific causes of Keratoconus is underdetermined with genetics playing a small factor, there is a strong correlation between those that have keratoconus and rub their eyes.

What are Scleral Lenses?

Scleral lenses are custom-fit contact lenses created to vault over the cornea and rest on the white part of the eye called the sclera. The latest research shows Sclerals are the ideal lens of choice for Keratoconus compared to RGPs of the past.

What makes Sclerals better?

  • Sclerals are larger and vault over the cornea whereas RGPs are smaller in diameter resting directly on the cornea. This is not ideal as it risks worsening of corneal scars over time.

  • Scleral lenses for Keratoconus provide a smooth, regular surface for light to focus in the eye and are filled with a preservative-free saline solution that can help mask corneal irregularities. Some patients with dry eye syndrome benefit from scleral contacts as the fluid reservoir can help keep the eye lubricated and comfortable during lens wear.

  • Scleral lenses are more stable and can readily correct residual astigmatism unlike RGPs. Some patients may need to wear glasses over RGPs to correct the left-over astigmatism.

Corneal Cross-linking for
Keratoconus

Corneal collagen cross-linking is an advanced procedure approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2016. Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) is not a cure for keratoconus, but it can help prevent the condition from getting worse and can vastly improve vision in patients of all ages. CXL is intended to prevent steepening or progression of the keratoconus process to potentially avoid needing a corneal transplant.
