It is recommended that children have their first comprehensive eye exam at around 6 months of age.
After the initial exam at 6 months, it is generally advised to have subsequent eye exams at age 3, and then before starting school at around age 5 or 6. After that, it is recommended to have eye exams every 1 to 2 years, or as recommended by the eye care professional.
You can help prepare your child by explaining that the eye exam is similar to a regular check-up for their eyes. You can also reassure them that it is painless and nothing to be afraid of. Bringing their favorite toy or comfort item can help them feel more at ease during the exam.
In some cases, eye dilation may be necessary to allow the eye care professional to thoroughly examine the back of the eye. However, this is not always required during every pediatric eye exam. Your eye care professional will determine if dilation is necessary based on your child’s specific needs.
