TearCare

The TearCare System is a device that has been approved by the FDA for treating a specific type of dry eye disease called evaporative dry eye disease. It is meant for adults who have this condition due to a problem with their meibomian glands. The TearCare System works by using heat therapy in combination with manual expression of the meibomian glands.

How It Works

The TearCare System is unique because it is the only device designed to clear blockages in the meibomian glands while harnessing a natural blink experience. It consists of disposable SmartLids™ that fit universally and are placed on the eyelids to deliver safe and effective heat therapy.

The portable SmartHub™ communicates with the SmartLids to control the amount and duration of the heat treatment, ensuring precise and controlled therapy. After 15 minutes of heat therapy, the Clearance Assistant forceps are used by the eye care professional to manually express the blocked meibum (a substance in the glands), targeting each individual gland while visually confirming the success of the treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect during this treatment?

During the TearCare treatment, thermal heat is used to gently warm the eyes, which helps to loosen any blockages in the meibum glands. This heat therapy lasts for approximately 12 minutes. After the heating phase, an eye doctor will manually express the meibum glands, carefully removing the blockages and encouraging the glands to work properly.

Is this treatment painful?

No, the procedure is generally comfortable for most patients as they can keep their eyes open and blink normally throughout. The entire process typically takes only about 15 minutes.

Am I a candidate for TearCare?

The TearCare® System is suitable for adults who have evaporative dry eye disease caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Patients should be at least 22 years old to be considered as candidates.

Before the procedure, it is important to remove contact lenses, and they should not be reinserted for at least one hour after the treatment.
