Meibography

Advanced eyelid gland imaging that guides dry eye diagnosis and treatment.

Meibography at Specs Appeal Dry Eye Center

Meibography allows us to see the oil glands inside your eyelids, helping us identify one of the most common causes of dry eye disease. This advanced imaging plays an important role in diagnosing dry eye, selecting the right treatment, and tracking your results over time.

Meibomian gland health is central to evaporative dry eye. Visualizing gland structure—rather than guessing from symptoms alone—helps us explain your condition clearly and protect gland function before lasting atrophy occurs. Learn more about dry eye evaluations.

What Is Meibography?

Meibography is specialized imaging that captures the meibomian glands within the eyelids. Instead of relying only on how your eyes look on the surface, we can assess whether glands appear intact, truncated, dilated, or dropout-prone—critical information for evaporative dry eye and MGD.

This technology is a key part of how we evaluate meibomian gland dysfunction and build treatment plans that match the true state of your glands.

Why Meibography Matters

Symptoms alone don’t always reveal how much gland structure has already changed. Two patients with similar burning can have very different meibography findings—and therefore different urgency and treatment intensity.

Early diagnosis gives us the opportunity to preserve healthy gland function, reduce inflammation, and improve tear film quality before more permanent changes occur.

What We Look For

Gland architecture and continuity

Areas of shortening or dropout

Signs consistent with obstructive MGD

Asymmetry between eyelids

Baseline status for future comparison

Correlation with tear film and eyelid findings

How Meibography Guides Treatment

Meibography findings help us decide when to emphasize eyelid hygiene, when in-office therapies such as OptiLight IPL or OptiPlus RF are appropriate, and how aggressively to monitor over time.

Seeing your glands also makes education clearer: you’ll understand why drops haven’t been enough—and why protecting oil gland health is central to lasting comfort.

Tracking Your Progress Over Time

Dry eyes often change over time. Repeat meibography, when clinically useful, helps us monitor whether treatment is supporting gland health and whether your plan should evolve.

Our commitment is long-term results: improving tear film stability, eyelid health, and ocular surface function—not just a few days of temporary relief.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does meibography hurt?

No. Meibography is a non-invasive imaging test. We may gently evert the eyelid to capture gland images; most patients find it quick and comfortable.

Is meibography part of every dry eye visit?

It is an important diagnostic tool and is used when evaluating evaporative dry eye and MGD. Your doctor will determine when imaging is most helpful for diagnosis and follow-up.

Can meibography reverse gland damage?

Imaging itself is diagnostic. Treatment aims to improve function and comfort and to preserve remaining glands. Earlier care offers the best chance to protect structure before advanced atrophy.

See the Glands. Treat the Cause.

If you’re ready for dry eye care guided by advanced diagnostics—not guesswork—schedule a comprehensive evaluation that includes meibography when appropriate.
