Dry Eye Disease Symptoms

  • Watery Eyes
  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Gritty feeling
  • Constant changing vision
  • Feel the need to use artificial tears
  • None of the above

All these can all be symptoms of dry eye disease. However, surprisingly many people have dry eye disease without having any of these symptoms.

The most common symptom of dry eye disease is NOTHING.

What is Dry Eye Disease?

The protective Outer Lipid Layer is essential for maintaining a healthy film on the eye. When the protective lipid layer of the tear film is lacking, often caused by a blockage or obstruction of the eyelids meibomian glands, the result can cause a variety of problems including fluctuating vision, burning, grittiness, and even excessive tearing.

Dry eye disease, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca, is a chronic and progressive disease affecting more than 100 million people worldwide.

Dry eye occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears, or when the tears evaporate off the surface of your eye too quickly. This can lead to an unstable tear film, resulting in inflammation and damage to the eye’s surface.

This inflammation decreases the eye’s ability to produce normal tears that protect the eye from irritation and keep it moisturized and lubricated.

The tear film is composed of three intermingling layers:

  • Oily Lipid Layer - Outermost layer prevents evaporation
  • Watery Layer - Middle layer moisturizes the eye
  • Mucous Layer - Inner layer allows adherence between the eye and the watery layer

What can Help?

For occasional dry eye symptoms, using a good non-preserved artificial tear and some minor modifications to the environment may bring relief. According to the American Optometric Association here are a few steps you can take to reduce the symptoms of dry eyes:

  • Hydrate - be sure to drink 8 to 10 glasses of water every day
  • Humidify - increasing the indoor humidity, especially in dry climates can help
  • Reduce impact from sun and wind - if you spend time outdoors, using wraparound sunglasses can help protect your eyes
  • Blink - be sure to blink regularly when reading or using technology for long durations

If you are find artificial tears provide only limited relief, don't worry much more can be done. There are many advanced in-office dry eye treatments such as Optilight IPL, radiofrequency, TearCare that are highly effective and provide lasting results.
